A Message from Chief Executive Officer Mary Jane Awrachow
You Light the Way
When children are removed from their homes because of abuse or neglect, it is the start of what can be a daunting journey. Children wonder if they’ll see their parents, or sometimes their siblings, ever again. They wonder if the people they love will be safe without them, and they wonder if they will be safe themselves. Most of all, they wonder “Who will love us now?”
Foster, adoptive and kinship parents, collectively known as resource parents, understand the confusion, fear and uncertainty children in care experience. Resource parents, along with the Division of Child Protection and Permanency (DCP&P), the courts, agencies like ours and concerned individuals like you light the way for these vulnerable young people, leading them towards safety, stability and security. Over the course of the journey, we strive to light up the eyes of each child in foster care with a sense of self-worth and a feeling of belonging. Then, when reunification occurs, we illuminate a pathway for those same children to follow back home.
Without those who light the way, children in foster care would truly be lost. That’s why FAFS offers support, training and advocacy to meet the special needs of foster, adoptive and kinship families, who provide safe, stable and nurturing homes for children in foster care. By offering empathy, expertise and practical advice, we help resource parents avoid caregiver burnout, so they can be there to shine for the next child who needs them.
We believe that children in foster care are the community’s children, with the same hopes and dreams as all children. With your help, our donor funded programs for children and youth in, or adopted from, foster care, help kids see and believe in what’s best and brightest in themselves.
As Eleanor Roosevelt said, “It is better to light a candle than curse the darkness.” Thank you to our donors and supporters, our partners, our staff and our families for lighting the way for New Jersey’s children in foster care.
